Remembering Alma Bertie Gates Mayfield Our friend, Norman Mayfield, sent us this photograph recently. He was seeking the identity of the men in the picture. The lady is his grand-aunt, by marriage, Alma Bertie Gates Mayfield. Despite the intense efforts of several PCHGA members, we were unable to come up with any names. Then, Norman was blessed with a breakthrough. He found someone who knew the people and identified all of them. Wonderful!
Besides Alma Bertie, left to right, are Floron Clayton Faries (born 15 February 1917 - died 03 Aug 1999 in Orange County, Texas); his brother, Leon Allen Faries (born 20 Feb 1918 - died 08 Sep 2000 in Newton County, Texas); Wilson Gates (born 26 Mar 1916 - died 23 Nov 1999 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, LA) and Cecil Gilbert LaGrone, Jr. (born 12 July 1929 in Deadwood, Panola County, Texas - living). Perhaps we should note here that Mr. LaGrone gave us permission to publish his name and other information- about him.
The Faries brothers were the sons of Allen Knight Faries (born July 27, 1890 in Coldwater, Tate County, MS - died 23 Feb 1952 in Longview, Gregg County, TX) and Mattie Lucinda Gates Faries (born 17 Oct 1897 - died 22 Dec 1948 in Longview, Gregg County, TX. She was a sister to Alma Bertie Gates). They (the Faries brothers) had one sister, Alleyne Faries (born 24 October 1923 in Gregg County, TX)
Cecil Gilbert LaGrone, Jr. was the son of Cecil Gilbert LaGrone, Sr. (born 10 May 1902 - died 03 Dec 1969) and Gladys Willie Gates LaGrone (born 20 June 1911 - died 04 July 1994). He had one sister, Winfred Gates LaGrone (born 24 Nov 1931 - died 29 April 1949 from injuries in an auto accident.
Alma Bertie Gates was born 24 December 1894 to Jeromie Porter and John Bedford Gates. She married Norman M. Mayfield (11 Feb 1888 - 17 Oct 1956) in Panola County on 09 June 1917. Both are buried in the Scott cemetery. Their children were Eula Maxine (born 19 Dec 1918 - died 20 Mar 1920), Herbert (born 1920 - died 2002). Alma Lee, Norma and Earl (born 1929- died 2005). Some of these children are still living and we prefer not to submit their statistics.
Information on the Gates, Faries, LaGrone and Mayfield families mentioned in this article is in our vertical file in the Leila Belle LaGrone Family History Center. Quite a bit of research was done on all of these people and will benefit any researcher who is seeking information on them.
We hope this helps someone.
